Money is the Root of This Problem

The fitness industry in 30 billion-plus in just gyms and studios. That doesn’t count apps, Internet programs, DVD programs, money generated from email marketing, YouTube and other social media revenue.

I would not be surprised if the total amount is well in excess of 100 billion a year. I have not researched that amount but I guarantee you that the amount is a staggering amount of money.

There are some very legitimate programs out there but sadly when so many people want their piece of that pie they resort to clickbait marketing tactics.  They overpromise on programs that can’t deliver the absurd results they mention in their marketing.

They might have a little disclaimer at the bottom stating that individual results will vary but trust me they absolutely know what they are doing when they make the ridiculous claims.

It used to be that the marketing mainly resided in the fitness magazines. This is an industry that would have pharmaceutically enhanced athletes grace the covers of their magazines and then hawk supplement products that they wouldn’t even use. Of course, they wouldn’t mention the actual illegal products that they were taking. That definitely wouldn’t help sell magazines and supplements.

Sadly in today’s modern Internet era, fitness garbage is even more pervasive. Now with YouTube, Instagram, email marketing, and the latest social media platforms, people are inundated with images of genetically gifted, pharmaceutically enhanced individuals unloading their latest products and horrible advice.

The Danger of the Marketing Hype

Putting aside for a moment the bad technique given by some of these social media celebrities that could actually injure you, is there a danger to this marketing hype?

I absolutely believe there is. Exercise and building strength are healthy for you. They are associated with living a longer life and having benefits with relieving stress and helping with lifelong health. If some scam artist markets results that are almost physiologically impossible or they market results without effort they are doing a huge disservice.

People that buy these programs will never live up to those standards and will quit. They might think fitness isn’t for them or that there is something wrong with them. Imagine someone jumping from one program to another and failing because they are aiming for impossible results and they haven’t really been educated on the true secret of fitness results.

These programs keep failing to deliver the results that were promised. Many people are eventually going to quit fitness altogether. To me, this is the danger. This is what is almost criminal to me.

The Truth in a Sea of Lies

Even in an industry oversaturated with marketing hyped lies there is Truth to be found.

If you are ready to look for it, accept it, and hopefully live it, the truth can be yours.

However, be warned the truth isn’t sexy, glossy, and definitely isn’t easy.

One of the good things about the truth is it doesn’t need to be financially expensive.

The Real Secret of Physical Fitness

Fitness Takes Time and Consistent Work!!!

That is it.

Well, of course, the extra details will be in regard to educating yourself and adapting your program to your goals and your results. That is just a part of the work.

So the next time you are tempted to buy a program or product that is going to give you ludicrous gains in almost no time at all, just reread the above statement and put that credit card away.

Educational Resources and a Disclaimer

Let us start off with the disclaimer that I am not physically fit. The natural gifts of my youth are far back in my rearview mirror. I have struggled for many years to improve my fitness.

Part of my issue is I was the sucker buying the BS programs and jumping from one garbage program to another. I hadn’t understood the secret of physical fitness yet.

Now I understand it will be a long, arduous journey and I am teaching myself to embrace it. I absolutely am at the very beginning of this journey.

Now in order to provide a wake-up call to those of you who have not yet realized this secret of physical fitness, I am going to provide a few YouTube resources that I find entertaining and educational. These channels do a great job of calling out the garbage.

James Linker of Shredded Sports Science

I absolutely love James Linker’s YouTube videos. He is very funny without being mean.

Many people will choose to ignore him because he isn’t “yoked”.  However, ignoring him because he doesn’t look like a fitness model is just robbing yourself of a great resource.

BSc Sports Science (Loughborough University)
Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Nottingham Trent University)
Personal Trainer (American Council on Exercise)

I don’t agree with everything he says but that is the way it should be.

Alan Roberts of Every Damn Day Fitness

Another great channel of informational videos that calls out all the garbage.

Not safe for work. There is lots of cussing and the F-Bombs come fast and frequent. Even with the cussing, I find his videos to be some of the most entertaining and informational videos on YouTube.

Kevin Meier of Pure BullFit

Another great source of YouTube videos and again not safe for work due to the cussing.
